2021.11.29 06:38 everythings_alright Just finished reading Death's End. Best sci-fi trilogy I have ever read but I feel it didn't quite stick the landing
So I just finished Death's End. And it was amazing. The scope is godlike, the ideas are amazing. I felt just a tiny bit disappointed in the last book. I won't focus on the positives because there's just too much to mention. The last couple of chapters tho. Especially after solar system gets 2D'd was just not good at all.
Ending the series at Humanity's Tomb on Pluto would've been beautiful, in my opinion. Maybe just hinting at Blue Space being the last hope of humanity.
Also, is it just me or is the timeline kinda wonky at the end there? I was under the impression that Blue Space was supposed to travel thousands of years just for a refuel and than thousands more to maybe find a terrestrial planet. But then Cheng Xin travels on HALO for like 300 years and finds that Blue Space has already settled four worlds and caught up to Solar System humans with the relativistic drive. How is that possible?
I was gonna say that the author lifted the veil too much at the end too much. But I feel it doesn't even do it justice, he took the veil and burned it. I loved getting a glimpse into Singer's civilization, it was just the sweet spot of seeing other non-human non-trisolaris civilizations. But then he just start name-dropping the annulators, the restorers and other godlike civilizations. (I didn't read the book in English, not sure about the names)
And then there's the pocket universe. I thought that was completely unnecessary, it feels like deus ex machina and kinda diminishes all the other tech in the rest of the series. There's the section where Cheng Xin learned to read Trisolaran, but in the end just didn't learn anything interesting? Why even mention it lol. Presumably Trisolarans had the pocket universe tech by the time HALO landed at the blue planet. So the trisolarans went from being exiled, only a a fraction of their population surviving on their fleet to building pocket universes? Weird timeline again, imo.
The pocket universes also really diminishes the whole 'universe is dying and dimension are collapsing' narrative. I LOVED that aspect and really feel that should've been the 'last step in technology' in the series. If you can just wait out the end of the universe in a pocket universe and pop back out after a new big bang, what does it matter?
And in the end, they just get a message from one of the godlike civilizations. That again just took so much mystery away from the universe. It made the universe feel less like a dark forest. It made it feel like just some dudes texting each other 'yo gimme that matter back from that pocket universe'. Made the universe feel so much smaller. And yes, it was billions of years in the future and maybe that's the point, it just didn't sit right with me.
Also I thought the call to return the matter from the pocket universes. That seems like a classic prisoner's dilemma / tragedy of the commons situation the series was leaning into the whole time. If everybody returns the matter, everybody benefits. If you return the matter and not everybody does, you get punished. If you don't return the matter, you don't get punished. You know what I mean. The book hinted at this but I was expecting it to be explored further.
So yeah, that's my mental diarrhea I just needed to write myself out of. Amazing amazing trilogy, probably will read it again, just a touch disappointed at the very end of the series. Really wish it ended at Solar System getting eaten by the 2D foil (not sure about the correct term). And either end it there or make a fourth book where the author delves deeper into the galactic people and the godlike civilizations. This just felt like the author wanted to do too much at the end of the book and it didn't quite work.

2021.11.29 06:38 Shhtteeve Strategy experience
I like to consider myself very experienced and hopefully somewhat competent, and for what it is worth these are some of my takes on new strategies with NSB after giving it a long hard test all weekend.
1) where you are, what you want and who you fight really determins the meta. There are lots of people guessing at the new meta, but honestly it looks to really depend on your goals. Some chunky infantry divisions and high org tanks work amazing in Europe. But make those as Japan and you will have a sad time deep in rural China.
2) Paratroopers are as broken as they should be. With careful planning you can really mess up supply routes landing on depos and railway routes.
3) using motorised for helping supply routes is great, but can you afford it. As any major I would recomend toggling it for your tank groups. But smaller counties really struggle with this and a better option could be lighter divisions.
4) Flamethrower tanks are super strong as a support unit.
Im sure there are lots of things I haven't encountered yet but the biggest peice of advice is as my first point. Think about who you are, what you want, and what opposes you... Wow that's a bit deep.

2021.11.29 06:38 CubesBuster I almost fainted!
-yesterday, around midnight I was washing my hands after using the bathroom, and then I started to lose my sight and hearing. I couldn't see anything, like I had my eyes covered. I said that I can't see and hear, while I could, and I was lucky my parents were nearby, and managed to help me walk back to bed. I only remember taking like 3 steps, and then I remember them telling me to sit down. Later they told me that I was running, even trough I don't remember it. Then we measured my blood pressure, and it was pretty low, probably from not eating enough as I don't feel that hungry as I have Covid
-today, around 8 o'clock I tried to go to the bathroom again, but I didn't even get out of my room when I started to see like yellow-black circle in front of me, and I started to feel weak again, and my mom helped me get back to bed. I can't even stand for even like half a minute!

Ok, last post a bit long, maybe all I need to ask is this: have you experienced involuntary jerking or waves of body wide conclusions? Had an hours long SOMETHING the other night, it was truly terrifying, i think it was a panic attack but I haven’t seen anything about this kind of thing and it’s making me a bit anxious!
